#GivingTuesday 1st December 2020 The Spokesmen Cycling Podcast EPISODE 262: Baron Bird: Bikes are the future SPONSOR: Jenson USA HOST: Carlton Reid GUEST: Big Issue publisher Baron Bird of Notting Hill in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea TOPICS: The Big Issue publisher Baron Bird of Notting Hill loves bicycling. He lives 7 miles from Cambridge and when visiting he cycles there. His latest Big Issue project is a docked bike share scheme for smaller cities using electric bikes fettled and hired out by unemployed people and others who may be vulnerable and in need of a way of improving their lives. Lord Bird has had a fascinating life so far — a life enriched by art and what he calls social kindness — and he's clearly not ready to put his feet up under his ermine robes just yet. The Big Issue is still sold by those living in poverty but, because of Covid, no longer from the street. Lord Bird discusses the various other ways you can now help out Big Issue vendors but first we talk about Giving Tuesday and Taking It Away Wednesday, with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea set to dismantle the well-used cycleway on Kensington High Street. Lord Bird slammed this decision saying "bikes are the future." LINKS: https://twitter.com/johnbirdswords https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bird,_Baron_Bird https://www.jensonusa.com/thespokesmen |
